Cate Le Bon returns with Michelangelo Dying, a record born not from intent but emotional upheaval. What began as a different project was overtaken by grief and transfigured into a raw, elliptical meditation on love and its aftermath – part catharsis, part self-confrontation. Le Bon describes the album as a photograph of a wound before it closes, a shifting sonic landscape that picks at the scab even as it seeks resolution. Continuing the direction of Reward and Pompeii, she builds intricate, spectral textures by warping saxophones, guitars, and voices through filters and pedals, forging a sound both synthetic and human – a machine with a heart. The result is a fluid, shape-shifting song cycle, with glimmers of David Bowie, Nico, John McGeoch, and Laurie Anderson flickering in and out of focus.
