Description
This Too Shall Light is the second solo record from Amy Helm, taking the listener down a spiritual path where Amy and her team of musicians channel a blend of folk, soul, gospel, and Americana. Produced by Joe Henry and recorded at the legendary United Recording Studios in Hollywood, this collection of songs features songwriting contributions from MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger, Ted Pecchio of Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and many more modern luminary songwriters. Also included are covers of Rod Stewart, T. Bone Burnett, Allen Toussaint, Robbie Robertson, along with a closing track that features a unique arrangement of the traditional Gloryland that her father, Levon Helm, taught her decades ago.
Helm left her home and comfort zone of Woodstock, NY, choosing to record in Los Angeles within the confines of just a four-day window. The musicians were directed not to overthink the songs, and Helm herself barely performed any of the selections while leading up to the recording. As a result, the sessions forced fast musical trust among the collaborators and yielded the vibrant instrumental improvisations heard throughout This Too Shall Light.
stands as a fine successor in the righteous roots line that includes The Band and the Staple Singers MOJO
