Tyler, The Creator’s Tiny Desk performance marked several firsts – his debut at NPR’s studio and the show’s first-ever nighttime taping. At Tyler’s request, his lighting crew transformed the space and cast him and his band in rich hues of fuchsia, orange and blue to create a mood as vibey as the music. Performing tracks from Flower Boy, Tyler showcased how his sound had moved on: no longer hip-hop’s class clown, he was an artist confronting vulnerability and self-doubt. Listening back now is a great reminder of how he evolved.
