One listen to Well Be The , the Oxford five-pieces beautiful and exhilarating debut album, tells you that Goldstein and his bandmates Roo Basin (guitar), Chris Dawson (guitar), Jason Warner (bass) and Michael Thompson (drums) learnt that lesson when, last year, they convened for a month to record the album at Londons legendary RAK studio. Its an incredible place, Jack enthuses, steeped in pop history. And we had such an intense experience we had hardly any contact with the outside world while we were making the record; we were staying in the residential part attached to the studio, and had just occasional visits from partners and friends, almost like we were being drip-fed occasional drops of real life. Oh, and one serious party that didnt go down at all well with the neighbours.
Fixers gelled just over three years ago, after experimenting with various sounds and incarnations. When I first Roo as a teenager, Jack reminisces, I was playing hardcore and he was in a doom band. If youd told me then that wed be in this band together, five years later, and be best friends, totally musically aligned, Id have been pretty sceptical. And now look at us. Leading lights of Oxfords unprecedentedly fecund music scene, the band are friends with other breakout acts such as Chad Valley, and feel enriched by being part of a currently extremely creative hub. Yet they dont, Jack says, identify with the concept of there being some common thread. If theres a musician in our town that I like, he explains, its because of the music, not where its from. Spend only a few minutes with them and youll realise that, for Fixers, its only ever because of the music. Talk of labels and scenes is self-defeating, Jack argues, and misses the point. If you like music, just like music. Its as simple as that.
